What is the difference between all of the different types of abilites, and how do I tell them apart?

Here is a list of how different ability types are worded: [MTG 403-06, 419] Activated Ability – This is written Cost: Effect Triggered Ability – This uses the words When,Whenever, During, At Replacement Effect – Use of the word Instead Mana Ability – Any ability that adds mana to your mana pool Static Ability – Anything written as Ability then a Cost. Most static abilities have other abilities associated with them. Prevention Effect – Any effect that stops something from occurring. Regeneration is an example.
