What is the difference between accidental storytelling and traditional storytelling?
Accidental storytelling is not a performance. Often when you hear stories you are called in to listen. A group usually congregates in a setting and sits down to hear a story. Accidental stories occur in the moment and are not scripted. They are completely made up on the spot are informal and often require the participation of the child in creating elements of the story. Accidental storytelling doesn’t put pressure on the child or parent to remember the story exactly as it was told. There is no memorization, no need to live up to a particular way of presenting the material. It strips any anxiety and self-consciousness from telling stories in the traditional sense. This builds children’s confidence in knowing they can create stories of their own since there are no set rules on how to tell a story only a desire to tell one.
