What is the difference between a university and a liberal arts college?
A liberal arts college offers a “liberal arts” undergraduate education. Liberal arts does not mean only “arts” or “humanities” subjects. Many liberal arts colleges have outstanding (physical & natural) science departments. “Liberal arts” is an educational approach that requires students to take a distribution of courses in different subject areas (writing/the humanities/the sciences, etc.) before they decide on their “major” subject area of specialization. Liberal arts colleges tend to be smaller than universities, with much more personal attention to students and contact between students and their professors. Unlike several universities, many liberal arts colleges do not offer professional courses (engineering, etc.); however, some do. Many of our students prefer to go to liberal arts colleges rather than “big name” universities because the learning and social environment at the former is similar to the atmosphere of a UWC.
