What is the difference between a union and a registration body?
Regulatory authorities are established to promote and regulate a profession. Many of them are self-regulatory in that members of the profession make the decisions about who is entitled to become, and in the case of misconduct, to remain a member of the profession. Regulatory bodies have responsibility for setting the standards for entry into the profession and the standards which must be maintained by all members of the profession. The purpose of regulation is the promotion of the profession and the protection of the community. The College of Teaching has regulation as one of its functions. A union is established to work for employees to negotiate employment conditions. Unions are committed to ensuring that their members receive a fair salary and employment conditions, that the working environment is safe, and that due process is followed in recruitment, probation and dismissal procedures.
