What is the difference between a traditionalist and a modernist in literature?
Those are probably regional or specialized terms, but the most obvious guess to me would be in regards to narrative style and structure. A traditionalist would probably follow the, well, traditional setup. Linear story telling; a beginning, middle and end; clearly defined conflict; slightly formal language; and, this is just an opinion based grasp, would probably be purist in regards to adaptations. A modernist would be the opposite in almost all aspects: show a preference for fragmentation, informal language, non-linear structures, experimental techniques, not quite as purist about adaptations, less focus on narrative, more focus on tone/feeling, etc. Also, Modernism is a universally recognized literary period, and the authors of said period are called Modernists. (Hemingway, Pound, Joyce, Faulkner, etc) I’m not familiar with a universal definition for Traditionalist that’s directly comparable, but Penguin Books publishes an amazing Dictionary of Literary Terms that’s not too expensiv
