What is the difference between a taxi and a private hire vehicle?
Hackney carriage taxis can be hailed in the street or from a taxi rank. They will display a white licence plate at the rear of the vehicle. Private hire vehicles, must be pre-booked – either by phone, post or in person at the operator’s office. They will display a yellow licence plate at the rear of the vehicle.
