What is the difference between a revival piece, a reproduction, and a fake?
A revival piece is an item of jewelry incorporating design elements of a previous era, but re-interpreting or modifying those elements in an artistic fashion or a different method of manufactoring. Most of the collectible revival pieces are already 100 years old. A reproduction is a modern copy of an older style of jewelry. Because some reproductions of Antique jewelry may now be over 50 years old, it is not unusual for reproductions to be mistaken for the actual items they were copying. A fake is a fraudulent item made to fool a buyer into thinking it’s authentic. Some fakes are quite easy to detect, while others require great expertise and vast experience.
