What is the difference between a Puffin crossing and a Pelican crossing?

0

The crossings with the far-sided red and green man and flashing amber for vehicles are Pelican crossings. The name was developed from an acronym for PEdestrian LIght CONtrolled. However, in 1997, new regulations made provision for the introduction of Puffin (Pedestrian User Friendly INtelligent) crossings. The Department for Transport wishes to see the Puffin type gradually replace the Pelican type over the next few years. The Puffin has no far side red and green man, has no flashing green man and has no flashing amber. The red and green man are sighted next to the push button to encourage the pedestrian to simultaneously look at the approaching traffic for improved safety.
