What is the difference between a Psychiatrist, Clinical Psychologist and Counsellor?
A Psychiatrist has a medical background and specialises in looking at problems from a biological (medical) perspective, diagnosing and treating mental illness with medication. A Clinical Psychologist works from an integrated biological, social and psychological perspective; alleviating mental health problems (e.g. anxiety, depression) and addressing parenting/ health concerns through talking treatments. A Clinical Psychologist does not give out medicine and has not completed a medical degree but instead has completed at least six years of full time study in the theory and application of psychological (talking) cures. A Psychologist (in Australia) has completed a three year undergraduate degree in Psychology and then has undergone 2 years supervision with a psychologist. A Counsellor works with individuals struggling with more general life issues e.g. divorce, bereavement etc. when there is less severe psychological distress or mental health concerns.
