What is the difference between a MPhil/PhD in Planning Studies and a MPhil/PhD in Town Planning?
The MPhil/PhD in Planning Studies is a standard-format research degree primarily involving a programme of individual research resulting in a thesis. The MPhil/PhD in Town Planning involves a set programme of taught courses, including the requirement of submission of coursework, that is undertaken in the first year. Thereafter, a student may proceed to the MPhil/PhD in Town Planning, by completing a programme of individual research resulting in a thesis. The MPhil/ PhD in Town Planning is accredited by the Royal Town Planning Institute (RTPI). For more details on this course, see MSc/MPhil/PhD Town Planning. When transferring from the taught MSc to the MPhil/PhD in Town Planning, the student must proceed to complete either an MPhil or PhD dissertation; it is not possible to revert to a path that would result in an MSc.
