What is the difference between a loft and non-loft insulation?
Most clothing insulation is commonly referred to as “loft” insulation. Loft insulations are fibrous materials that insulate by entrapping air between the fibers. It is this entrapped air that the insulation heavily relies on for its insulative properties. It is also critical to maintain its “loft” to maintain its insulative properties. For example, you can’t simply stuff two layers of insulation in the walls of your house and expect it to be twice as warm, because you have compressed the insulation and signficantly reduced in insulative capabilities. A non-loft insulation does not have this empty air space in its structure and thus has better heat retention and thermal properties even under compression.
