What is the difference between a land and sea hermit crab, if it as simple as …?
All are born and live the first few weeks in saltwater (the exception here is the Ecuadoran land crabs, since Ecuador has no boundaries with the ocean – they live in fresh water instead). The terrestrial crabs climb up onto the beach and live mostly on land after that, although they may still need to soak in water to keep their gills moist. Marine hermit crabs stay in the water their entire lives.
