What is the difference between a juice cocktail and a nectar?
Before the early ’90’s there used to be clear distinctions between pure juices, juice cocktails, juice drinks, juice flavored drinks and artificially flavored juice drinks. People in this business are looking to position their products for marketing effect and are ignoring these distinctions. This is very confusing for the consumers. Recently, the labeling law changed so that fruit beverages-other than soda-had to declare the percentage of juice of the label. We had been doing this since the law was suggested in the late 80’s. Nectar are generally made from whole fruit (puree), have a higher juice content than juice cocktails and other diluted juice beverages and are thicker than juices-but the standard for nectars was dropped.
