What is the difference between a first- and third-generation cephalosporin antibiotic, and why is it important?
SPECTRAMAST® LC is classified as a third-generation cephalosporin. The third-generation cephalosporins have enhanced activity against Gram-negative bacteria, while retaining good activity on Gram-positive bacteria. Members of third-generation cephalosporins are more resistant to the effects of beta-lactamase enzymes that inactivate the earlier generations of cephalosporins and penicillin.
