What is the difference between a facilitated self-study course and an online instructor-led course?
Although both types of course structures contain unique instruction styles they are both very different. In the case of ASAE & The Center, a facilitated self-study course is asynchronous; designed to give flexibility to the learners (participants). However, flexibility also places more responsibility on the participant and less on the facilitators. Participants are expected to read the literature and then discuss online their findings and interpretations. And, because the course is self-study, participants are encouraged to utilize the various tools provided in the course to aid them towards completion. A facilitated self-study course is designed with a pre-developed course syllabus that is followed by the participants and faculty. Meanwhile, the faculty, the assignment outline and the online discussions guide the participants forward.
