What is the difference between a DVR and a DVD Recorder?

Hi Patti F, Your mother is correct. A DVR records on a hard drive. Most also will copy to DVDs. WalMart carries the Philips DVR. It is a good one I highly recommend. It writes its recordings to a hard drive and will copy to a DVD if you want. You record by time and channel like you did with a VHS recorder. There are no monthly subscription fees. Yes, you can put more then one show on a DVD. You can put up to six hours on a DVD but the quality is slightly reduced. Go here to see the one WalMart carries and scroll down to see all the features and details – http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.d… I hope that helps you.
