What is the difference between a DVD-R and a DVD+R?
Much like the VHS vs Betamax battle of the 1980s, DVD-R and DVD+R are simply two different technologies that both use different formats. No single company owns the rights to DVDs, and therefore both formats are backed by different parties within the market that may have some interest in seeing their chosen format succeed. A DVD+R will allow multiple recording layers, whereas a DVD-R will only allow one single layer. Therefore, DVD+R may provide slightly more storage capacity per disc, accounting for its slightly higher cost! Typically, DVD-R enjoys the widest industry support, and is generally / unofficially accepted as the current standard by most CD Player/recorder manufacturers.
