What Is The Difference Between A Direct Democracy Verses A Representative Democracy?

In a direct democracy, the citizens have the right to directly participate in the decision making process through referendums and voting even for law making purposes. Direct democracy principles can be applicable at the lower levels of towns, states and sub states. In a representative democracy, the people through a voting process, elect people who they think are eligible to represent them. The elected people then represent their people at various issues and make decisions on behalf of the people who have elected them. It is not feasible to practice direct democracy at the level of the country as it is difficult to solicit the views of all the people at the level of the country and then make a decision for every single issue. This would unnecessarily delay matters but what many countries do is that they start with referendums at the state level and the views of the people of all the states are accumulated to reach a final decision.
