What is the difference between a CPM Midwife, Obstetrician, or Nurse Midwife?
A CPM midwife is a professional that has passed the NARM (North American Registry of Midwives) exam. She is able to conduct births in homes and birth centers in various states. Prenatal appts are usually leisurely and very relationship oriented. The midwife and the client place a mutual amount of trust in each other to enable the mother to have the satisfying birth she desires. OBs are medical doctors that attend births in the hospital and some birth centers, although some may still attend home births. Prenatals are usually quick and the client/professional relationship rarely becomes anything extra. Nurse Midwives are nurses that obtain additional education for midwifery. They are able to attend births in hospitals, homes, and birth centers in various states as well.
