What is the difference between a counselor/therapist, psychiatrist, and a psychologist?
The therapists who counsel clients at New Leaf Resources are licensed, but are not psychiatrists or psychologists. Psychologists are licensed by the state and do a great deal of psychological testing and research. Psychiatrists are medical doctors who specialize in treating emotional disorders and are licensed to prescribe medications if the situation warrants. The therapists at New Leaf Resources will refer you to a licensed psychologist if psychological testing seems appropriate. We also would refer a client to a psychiatrist if we believed medication might be needed. We work with Dr. Robert Marquis who is our consulting psychiatrist. If Dr. Marquis believes medication is necessary for a particular malady he will prescribe the medication, monitor the medication and will work closely with a New Leaf Resources counselor to provide the best care for a client’s needs.
