What is the difference between a cedar shingle and a cedar shake?
A cedar shingle is usually between 16″ and 18″ long and has a sawn, smooth surface with a thin, uniform butt. Cedar shakes are usually about 24″ long, and the exposed surface is usually split rather than sawn. This split exposes the grain and gives a rough-hewn appearance. The butt end of a shake is much thicker than a shingle.
