Generally, career coaches work with their clients in a relationship that is more interactive and directive than in most counseling. Goals are not merely identified, but ultimately achieved. I am certified as a Global Career Development Facilitator (GCDF) through The Center for Credentialing & Education. To receive this certification, one must complete intensive instruction in career development theory and practice (in my case, I studied at the Center for Education and Work at UW-Madison) and also log a minimum number of hours working in the field. More information on the GCDF certification requirements is available at www.cce-global.org. Be aware that searching online, you will come across coaches with widely differing backgrounds and training, some of whom have paid for training from online institutes.
