The number represents the amount of lines the screen is showing information on. Therefore the higher number creates a higher clarity picture than a lower number. The letter represents either i-(Interlacing) or p-(Progressive scan). Both letters are referring to the way in which the screen images are refreshed on the monitor. Interlacing only refreshes the screen in one pattern while Progressive scan is refreshing the images in 2 pattern, therefore a 1080p- Progressive scan gives the highest quality picture.
