1/4″ acrylic has a lot more rigidity and is more durable than 1/8″ due to its thickness. If you are using a mirror size that is larger than 24″ x 24″ the 1/4″ acrylic works better due to its rigidity, where 1/8″ tends to be too flexible. 1/4″ acrylic is also better for security and safety if you are using it in situations where there is risk of injury.
