What is the difference and smililties between prejudice and discrimination?
The word “prejudice” has negative connotations, whereas “discrimination” doesn’t necessarily imply that something is amiss with that person’s moral code. Discrimination CAN be positive. For example, if someone were to say that they have “discriminating taste”, it’s assumed that the person is saying that they have a preference for one thing over another based on experience; and we should thusly give them respect for their opinions, which may or may not be more cultured than our own. In that sense, “discrimination” can be a positive thing. “Prejudice”, however, always implies a negative attitude. Heh. This question actually reminds me of a poorly-translated English sign that I once saw on a noodle house in Fukuoka, Japan. The sign was probably trying to communicate that by eating there, you were an obvious noodle connoisseur who appreciates some good udon when you see it.
