What is the difference and similarities from Medieval Sports and Modern Sports?

Medieval sports may be similar, but have different rules/equipment to what we now view as modern sports. Traditional welsh football looks very different to American gridion for example. In fact their are many different forms of “football” now that all stemmed from “kicking a ball” during the middle ages – rugby, soccer, gridion, australian football etc. Another example of this would be when fencing first started in the renaissance, persons could move in any direction and could use their other hand in an offensive or defensive manner, with the entire body as a target. Modern fencing is restricted to moving up and down a strip and only certain parts of the body are recognised “kill zones”. Modern sports are derived from a single simple task (running with a ball from one end of the green to another) and evolved over time and within different geographical locations, creating their own rules and identity.
