1) Alligators have broad snouts – many crocodiles do not. 2) When an alligator has its mouth closed you can generally only see teeth from the upper jaw sticking down. Crocodiles often have both sets of teeth partly exposed. 3) Alligators are not tolerant of salt water, but many crocodiles are. Of course, most crocodiles still live in fresh water, and the occasional alligator will briefly wander out into brackish water, but it sometimes helps.
