What is the Departmental educational philosophy?

We use three principles of education within the training program. These principles include: graded experience, repetition, and Socratic teaching methods. By graded experience we mean that residents are given more complex patients as their experience will allow them to manage in a safe and protected manner. The rotational schedule is designed to expose residents to simple, less challenging cases early in their training and more complex and challenging cases as they gain experience and knowledge. Secondly, the faculty believes that repetition of factual material and patient care experience is an important tool in training a resident to recognize the complex variations of patient conditions. Finally, throughout the program the faculty uses Socratic teaching methods to challenge the thinking of our residents by using a question and answer format during the formal and informal educational sessions with the residents.
