What is the demand on the power grid during start-up?
Pure electrical driven compressors can have as much 6 to 7 times normal running demand load during start-up. Dual drive units eliminate this increased demand pull by using the gas engine during start-up. The motor, coupled to the engine via the compressor, spins up to operating speed and is then energized taking the operating load. The engine then coasts to an idle cool down mode, and eventually to a stop which is allowed by the over-running clutch. This is an inherent soft- start system specific to the dual drive unit.
