What is the definition of variation in plants and annimals?

Variation within a species is having different versions (different seqiences) of individual genes called alleles. There can be a few alleles for one gene & many for another gene there is no set number of variants. Nor is there a set degree of difference between the alleles. Blood type alleles A, B, & O have a limit number of three from the single gene called the ABO gene. Other genes such as MC1R seems to have at least 9 and maybe 30 alleles that give us all the red colors in hair or no red. Plants have the same biochemistry and genetic system as animals so have alleles for the genes. Each species has a set of genes that encode information to allow the embryo to grow and develop. This set of genes makes up its genome. The version of the genome can vary because the exact alleles inherited will be different and the combination of alleles will vary in how they work together. So genetic variation is both the individual alleles for each gene and the combination of alleles from each parent t
