What is the definition of pop music?
One way of defining pop music is whether it is in the charts. This is not infallible, many respectable bands who would not call themselves popular end up in the charts from time to time (the likes of Pink Floyd in the days before’The Wall’ and Led Zeppelin for example). People like Frank Sinatra once dominated the number 1 slot for ages (My Way) and this is not exactly what would normally be decribed as a Pop Song (Easy Listening more like). They are usually songs trimmed to fit airplay time (nominally 3 mins long – but Bohemian Rhapsody was a departure from this) and are generally thought of as a commercial product. No easy definition then – you will probably find a range of definitions on line – and it is a largely subjective definition – one man’s pop song is another’s progressive underground anthem.
