What is the definition of parallax?
Parallax is the apparent shifting of an object with respect to a distant background, due to displacement of the observer with respect to the object. The word “parallax” can refer to the actual quantitative amount of shift, as in “that star’s parallax is 0.001 arc-seconds”, or just to the general effect, as in “the ancients were unable to observe stellar parallax”.
