What is the definition of “independent measures” in psychology?
Independent measures are ones where each individual only makes one response in the sample, and where the different levels of the independent variable (i.v.) are not related. An example would be where two groups on the i.v., male and female, respond to a questionaire only once. Then you look for sex differences to their response. An example of a dependent study would be where each sex rates multiple levels of a d.v. (dependent variable) such as rating photos of women for attractiveness. In this study, each participant would have multiple ratings.
