What is the definition of a Major Emergency?
A major emergency can be defined as: “Any event or situation which threatens serious damage to a human welfare in a place in the UK, the environment of a place in the UK or war or terrorism which threatens serious damage to the security of the UK.” This definition is widely accepted and encompasses both sudden impact events such as transport accidents and explosions and the more ‘creeping crisis’ type incidents such as Foot and Mouth or the Fuel Crisis
