What Is The Definition Of A Hostile Work Environment?
By: Jennifer Maughan According to the definition of a hostile work environment, the actions and behaviors of someone in a workplace is affecting an employee’s performance and well-being in a negative way. A hostile work environment can be created as a result of such behaviors as sexual harassment, various types of discrimination or bullying. Work harassment occurs when the speech or behavior is severe and pervasive enough to create a hostile workplace. Sexual Harassment A hostile work environment created via sexual harassment is what people most often think of. While women are overwhelmingly the victims of sexual harassment, it is not exclusive. Whether male or female, sexual harassment occurs when unwelcome behavior of a sexual nature is directed at an employee, including repeated requests for sexual favors, sexual advances and sexual behaviors tied into an employee’s performance, advancement or continued employment.
