What is the definition and application of Cognitive Psychology?
Also called Cognitive Engineering, Cognitive Psychology refers to the design of complex systems to conform to human cognitive strengths and avoid human cognitive weaknesses. It is the psychological science that studies cognition – the mental processes that are hypothesized to underlie behavior. This covers a broad range of research domains that examines questions about the workings of memory, attention, perception, knowledge representation, reasoning, creativity and problem solving. Cognitive psychology is radically different from previous psychological approaches in two keys ways. • It accepts the use of the scientific method, and rejects introspection as valid methods of investigations – unlike phenomenological methods such as Freudian psychology. • It posits the existence of internal mental states (such as beliefs, desires and motivations) – unlike behaviorist psychology.
