What is the default and recommended memory allocation for the ESX host console?
By default, the latest ESX installation software allocates 272MB of physical system memory to the host console. Per Vmware “3rd Party Software Guidelines”, “By default, 272MB of RAM is allocated to the service console and is shared by all the processes running within the service console.” However, now that the backend Vmware management processes have been written in Java, PHD has observed that 272MB doesn’t seem to be enough for the VMware Java processes to run well in. This will often manifests itself as error message, “-999” reported by “vmware-cmd” after being called by esXpress backup processes. For example, when esXpress tries to register/create VBAs, there are times when it fails to do so because VMware reports other tasks are running (which may have been completed but not properly noted.). Generally speaking, esXpress recommends increasing the host console memory to 500MB or 800MB if it can be spared.
