The tight tolerances within the engine close up and lubricant can no longer work. Head gaskets are crushed and often start to leak, making the overheating much worse. Continued overheating will also crack cylinder heads and can gall cylinder walls. Since the automatic transmission fluid is cooled by the same radiator transmission damage can also occur.
