In 1975, a plexiglass model of the hypocycloid mechanism was constructed to study the motion and moving parts. Then in 1986, a working two-stroke engine utilizing the hypocycloid mechanism was constructed. This engine was similar to prevailing two-stroke engines except that it incorporated the hypocycloid gear mechanism for balance and linear rod motion and it used the underside of the piston for intake but it did not incorporate the external combustion chambers. Patent applications were completed in 1991 and 1992 and patents were granted in 1992 and 1993. A technical paper was written in 2000 and submitted to the Society of Automotive Engineers, Inc. It was published by SAE and presented at a forum in Detroit that same year. Time and financial constraints have prevented further development since that time. To see the PC2S operating cycle and how it compares to conventional two and four stroke operating cycles, follow this link to the animation.
