What factors are driving the growth? Kerala has always been a ‘leader state’ in food processing. It has been a major exporter of spices, cashews and marine products since independence, accounting for a considerable portion of the country’s food exports. The prominence of food sector in Kerala is highlighted by the fact that the state has the highest per capita expenditure on food in the country as per the statistics of the Ministry of Food Processing Industries, GOI. Due to the lack of any rural-urban divide in the state, often the entire state is considered as a single metro city for marketing purpose and many of the products are launched first in Kerala for the initial market studies due to the highly developed and mature nature of the market.
