The current building program is supported by three bond funds and Certificates of Participation (COPs) issued by Mecklenburg County as an alternative funding mechanism. The 1996 State Bonds include specific renovations/expansions at 23 schools for $119 million. The 1997 County Bonds include specific renovations/expansions at 46 schools and the construction of 10 new schools for a bond total of $415 million. The 1999 COPs fund includes specific supplemental funding of existing renovations/expansions at 5 schools and the construction of 2 new schools for a total of $50 million. The 2000 bond fund includes specific renovations/expansions at 22 schools and the construction of 4 new schools for a total of $275.5 million. The 2002 bond fund includes specific renovations/expansions at 25 schools, the design only of 4 new schools, and the construction of 1 new middle school. These five initiatives make up the current Capital Improvements Program, or CIP.
