What is the crime situation in the rural communities where scholars live and work?
Although there are notably high crime rates in Kenya’s and South Africa’s major cities, it is much safer in the rural areas where scholars live and work. The communities are small and nearly everyone knows each other, making community members accountable to one another. Crime is minimal in the communities and we have never experienced a problem during our various trips there. We travel to cities in groups and we have never had an incident. We continue to take every precaution against random crime.
