What is the Credit for Early Action Program?
The Credit for Early Action Program is one of the mechanisms that facilities may be able to use to meet their greenhouse gas emission reduction targets. These targets are set out in Turning the Corner, a tough federal plan that includes regulating industry’s greenhouse gas emissions to help achieve the Government’s commitment to a 20% reduction in Canada’s overall emissions by 2020, relative to 2006 levels. The Government recognizes that some companies took action to reduce their greenhouse gases prior to 2006. The Credit for Early Action Program is intended to address the possible disadvantage that a regulated facility could face as a result of having undertaken greenhouse gas reduction measures early. Facilities that took such actions between 1992 and 2006, and that will likely find themselves subject to mandatory greenhouse gas reductions, may be eligible to receive a one-time credit for their reductions, providing those actions are verified.
