What is the cost of living in New York, New York?
Here’s an interesting “cost of living comparison calculator,” where you can choose two cities and see the differences in a couple dozen categories. Actually it doesn’t simply use cities, but metro areas from the census department, so the NYC area is broken into different areas of the “New York – White Plains – Wayne NY-NJ” area — which is helpful, because there are significant differences within the metro area. Compares everything from home prices to haircuts, toothpaste to orange juice, movies to bowling. One thing I found interesting: I live in Brooklyn, so compared that to Manhattan… and was told I can live 17.74% cheaper where I am than I could on the other side of the river. So, something to keep in mind when you think about costs in “New York, New York.” It’s a big city, with wide variations.
