What is the cost of living in Galveston, Texas?
Gosh, that’s like asking what’s the weather like in Texas. It depends on so many factors. There are billionaires in Galveston and there are dirt poor people in Galveston. Home prices are a bit inflated compared to the mainland because you’re near the beach. But, they’re still a great deal as far as coastal real estate goes. There are tons of houses on the market right now and you could probably get a decent 3/2 for about $125-$200K. Property taxes aren’t too outrageous or anything. Rent is high right now because so many people were displaced by Ike. You’ll pay more insurance than some too. As far as utilities go, that depends on your usage. I know some people who pay $50-$100 a month on electricity and/or gas, but some who pay $600 a month for roughly the same space. One of your biggest expenses might be private school if you have elementary aged children. I wouldn’t trust most public elem. schools here. Pretty sad actually. High school is fine.
