What Is the Correct Way to Peel an Orange?
Oranges are colorful, healthy, fresh–and very messy. Anyone who has ever tried to peel an orange quickly while a small, hungry child waits–or stands within squirting distance when the child himself is peeling an orange–knows this all too well. Not to worry. There is a splatter-free and very quick orange-peeling method that will keep everyone happy and well fed. The trick is to use a very sharp knife and a delicate touch. Hold the orange on a cutting board so that the navel, or stem end, is on your right. Cut the very end off the right end of the orange. Try to get only peel; don’t just whack off a few inches. Aim to leave all of the segments intact. Slice an even thinner sliver off the left end. Hold the orange with the cut left end facing down. Use a very sharp paring knife to make a shallow cut through the peel only, from the top to the bottom.
