To jump start a flat battery from another vehicle, bring them close enough together that the jump leads will reach both batteries. Ensure, though, that the vehicles are not touching and that the voltages of the batteries are the same. With the engine of the other car switched off, connect the positive red jump lead onto the positive terminal of the charged battery and the other end to the positive terminal of the flat battery. Connect the black negative jump lead to the charged battery and then to the negative terminal or the earth strap of the flat battery. Make sure that all the jump lead clamps are secure. Start the engine of the vehicle with the charged battery and run on idle for a few minutes at about 1500 revs (about 50 per cent more revs than normal idle).
