what is the controversy around the movie the Golden Compass about?”
I guess the real problem as people who are devout see it isn’t so much the film itself…even high ranking church officials have said it’s a really good fantasy film which in and of itself has a positive message, not at all anti-religious, because anything that WAS in the book was “smoothed out” for public consumption. The real problem is the author went on record saying several times that he’s a staunch atheist, and that his books are “about killing God.” Aparently the 3 book series, of which this is one book, centers on a girl who embarks on a mission to kill a God who has gone insane. It’s a lot about the author’s agenda, he makes no secret that he’d like nothing more than to turn people away from God. So, what has the devout all up in arms is that once kids see the movie, they will like it so much they are going to want to read the books, which DON’T have the rough edges blunted. They are concerned that this will warp the little minds and turn them against God. Personally, I think
