What is the connection between persons convicted of a serious crime and addiction problems?
I discussed this problem with a few people who have spent a lot of time looking into the situation and they say that more than 80% of those in prison in California have a serious addiction problem. They also state that there are very few resources for treatment of this population. A study was done in California regarding the cost/benefits of treatment in California and it was determined one dollar spent on treatment saved the state seven dollars. Possibly due to political reasons, there has been no really serious use of this information and recommendations.
