Bituminous coal is a type of coal. Its quality is better than lignite but poorer than anthracite. The composition of bituminous coal can and does vary from one deposit to the next. However, all bituminous coal is 45 to 86% carbon. Some hydrocarbons are also present. Hydrogen and sulfur are found in smaller amounts. Also, this type of coal usually contains some water.
